Peyrolles is a pretty Provencal commune on the Route des Alpes, along the Durance River, between Meyrargues and Jouques. After a long straight stretch lined with plane trees, you arrive directly at the town's entrance. The town boasts a number of medieval treasures, including its XVᵉ château, restored in the XVIIᵉ and XVIIIᵉ, owned by the Archbishop of Aix and later by King René. At the foot of the northern rampart, a wrought-iron gate guards the entrance to the grotte aux palmiers, which contains palm fossils dating back 6 million years. Also worth seeing are the Romanesque nave of Saint Pierre church, the Greek cross-shaped Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre and its frescoes.
