A statuette of the Duke of La on the square of the city centre erected on 6 October 1861 marks the recognition of this commune of 6 500 inhabitants. It is indeed the family of Rochefoucauld that it owes its park and castle. It created a vocational school for orphans in the th century. This innovative experience gave birth in 1780 to the first School of Arts and Crafts.
