The name Ermenonville is inextricably linked with the memory of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The philosopher spent the last weeks of his life here, invited by one of his admirers, the Marquis de Girardin. It was a happy period in the tormented, wandering life of the author of La Nouvelle Héloïse, who loved to forage in the woods surrounding his benefactor's château. It was here that he died in 1778. Nélie Jacquemart-André also left her mark on Ermenonville, bequeathing Chaalis Abbey to the Institut de France in 1912. A visit to Ermenonville should be combined with a visit to the romantic ruins of the Cistercian abbey.
