Halfway between Redon and Saint-Nazaire, on the Nantes-Vannes axis and bordering two départements, Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan, Saint-Gildas-des-Bois has all the assets of a small town. The town center is reminiscent of the commune's origins, in that it is dominated by the 12th-century abbey church, as well as a former abbey, an impressive architectural ensemble that houses the community of the sisters of Saint-Gildas-des-Bois. A historic monument, the abbey church became the department's third listed church in 1994. The current name originates from the pine forest planted under Louis-Philippe.
