Overlooking the Vilaine valley, Vitré is a pearl of Breton medieval heritage. The town grew up around its monastery in the 11th and 12th centuries. Its fortified castle, defending access to Brittany, soon made it as important a military stronghold as the town of Fougères. The first castle was built by Rivallon le Vicaire, knight of Duke Geoffroy I, but the second building replaced it and ensured the town's influence. From the 15th century onwards, Vitré made its living from the international trade in hemp cloth and draperies. Numerous gabled and half-timbered houses give the town a unique atmosphere.
