The origins of La Roche-Bernard date back to the 10th century. A Viking, Bern Hart (strong like a bear), built his keep on the rocky promontory overlooking the Vilaine River. The town's name was then La Roche-Bernard. The territory became the barony of La Roche-Bernard, where feudalism was organized and port activities developed. Until the French Revolution, it was one of the most powerful baronies in Brittany. The narrow streets of the old quarters are pleasant places to stroll. This commune, with its rich history, can be admired by strolling through its streets, along its port or, if you're looking for a little height, from its ancient suspension bridge over the Vilaine.
