The commune was created in 1790, 60 km from Nantes and 15 km from Saint-Nazaire. The territory of Saint-Joachim is composed of 7 islands: Aignac, Ménac, Bais, Pendille, Brécun, the most famous being Mazin and Fédrun. The commune has 5 historical monuments. They are several megalithic monuments: the funerary Cairn on the islet of the Treasure, the funerary enclosure at Lucas la Palette, the megalithic set on the Petite Butte des Roches, the prehistoric set on the islet of Butte aux Pierres and the set of megalithic burials at Butte aux Gorzeaux. Saint-Joachim is home to the administrative offices of the Brière Regional Nature Park.
