In 1823, Le Marais absorbed La Chapelle-Souquet to the east of its territory. The commune thus created took the name of La Chapelle-des-Marais. According to INSEE, the commune had 4 185 inhabitants in 2017. It is the northern entrance to the CARENE, the Agglomeration Community of the Nazairian Region and Estuary. The town is located 25 km from Saint-Nazaire. This village was famous for its basketry. In the middle of the 19th century, nearly one in four inhabitants wove baskets which, when strong, were exported as far as Paris and Germany. In order to rediscover this heritage, studies, exhibitions and articles are devoted each year to this craft.
