Poton de Xaintrailles was born around 1390. This Gascon gentleman fought against the English during the Hundred Years War. As a prisoner, he was exchanged for John Talbot, the English general defeated at Castillon in 1453. Charles VII named him Marshal of France in 1454 and gave him the town of Saint-Macaire. He died in Bordeaux at the Trompette castle in 1461. In the registers of the Parliament, we find this comment: "One of the most valiant captains of the kingdom of France who was responsible with La Hire for driving out the English! ». The name of this commune is therefore engraved in the collective memory. To be admired: the castle and its 14th century keep, the 15th century church.
