From the 19th century onwards, Tourcoing experienced extraordinary growth as a result of the Industrial Revolution. As in Roubaix, the textile industry took over and transformed the town. Demographics exploded and industry prospered, so much so that many new buildings sprang up. This frenzy lasted until the two world wars... Tourcoing suffered under the Occupation - in fact, it was in a bunker in the town that the message announcing the D-Day landings was intercepted. After the war, business picked up again... until the sad period of crisis, which Tourcoing overcame by developing several cultural hubs, which have become its new hobbyhorse.
