Rising to 3,952 m, Yushan or Jade Mountain is the roof of Taiwan. It was granted national park status in April 1985 and covers an area of 105,490 ha. Also called Mount Morrison on old Anglo-Saxon atlases and the New High Mountain by the Japanese between 1895 and 1945 - it surpasses Fujiyama by 3,776 m - Mount Yushan regained its original name in 1945. Although it occupies only 3% of the island's surface, Yushan National Park contains more than half of Taiwan's endemic plants. Mountaineers from all over the world come to test their endurance and climbing skills on the various peaks that surround the Yushan.
