Lochwiller is notorious for its cracked houses and ground lifting. When a couple decides to drill a borehole at a depth of 140 metres for the installation of a heat pump, a groundwater table is drilled at a depth of 64 metres, and the water rises and floods the area. Finding no more exit it penetrates into a layer of danhydrite and a chemical reaction occurs inducing a swelling of the hill of sometimes more than 50 centimeters to which the houses and equipment did not resist.
