Montfaucon is the geographical center of the department. It is not a very important commune, nevertheless, during the construction of the freeway, a prehistoric site of the final Neolithic was discovered at the place called Les Bouriates located at 750 meters east of the village of Montfaucon. A rectangular construction was discovered. Carbon-14 dating of a charred post fragment indicated the range 2853-2499 BC. Its elevated position was indeed a strategic choice of protected habitat for man. The city was founded in the Middle Ages and took the form of a bastide. Today Montfaucon is known for its rehabilitation center.
