The foundation of Labastide-Murat, a charming village located at an altitude of 450 m, dates back to the Middle Ages. In order to welcome the pilgrims of Saint-Jacques and Rocamadour, Fortanier de Gourdon, lord of the XIIIth century, established there a fortified country house to which were added a church, walls and a castle. But the place is known for the fact that Joachim Murat, marshal of the Empire and king of Naples, was born there. He built the castle of Labastide-Murat, a sumptuous neoclassical residence. In 1852, the village took its current name - Labastide-Murat - in homage to Murat, this child of the country whose homonymous museum recalls the exceptional destiny.
