Souillac has a long history of human presence, revealed by excavations uncovering human skulls and horse skeletons dating back 250,000 years. Between the Dordogne and Borrèze rivers, the town was founded in the 10th century by Benedictine monks who drained the "souilh" marshes. A small trading town, it grew up around the abbey in the 12th century. Today, Souillac's main assets are tourism, with its geographical location, its restaurants and vacation accommodation, its architectural heritage, including the abbey church of Sainte-Marie, and its economy, with the Louis Roque distillery, which produces a famous brandy.
