The history of the oldest town takes us back to the time of the Gallo-Romans, but it is now more its medieval heritage that strikes the visitor. The natural site of Cajarc, and its location in its circus of cliffs, also makes it a place of interest. It was one of the first "free communes of Quercy" in 1256 and resisted English assailants throughout the Hundred Years War, protected by its imposing fortifications. A Protestant stronghold during the Wars of Religion, Cajarc saw its walls razed to the ground in 1623 by order of Richelieu himself. More recently, the commune went down in history through Coluche and Guy Lux, who directed "Le Schmilblick", a well-known parody of a game show. An avenue is named Coluche, a beautiful wink as a tribute.
