The village of Les Arques originated as a priory-deanery under the Marcilhac abbey between 1182 and 1193. After the onslaught of the Hundred Years' War, construction transformed the village into a stronghold until the middle of the 16th century. The Wars of Religion divided the Christian world and partly destroyed the village. The history of Les Arques is linked to that of a major 20th-century artist, the sculptor Zadkine. Zadkine fell in love with the Bouriane region, and in 1934 settled in his home and studio in Les Arques. Today, this house is a museum where you can contemplate many of his works.
