The village is built on the plan of a bastide. Originally named Montolza, it was founded in 1319 by the King of England's seneschal, Guillaume de Toulouse. Its origins, however, date back to the 10th century: a small rural community settled around the church of Notre-Dame-de-Ginolhac, forming a first nucleus. An ancient castle is also mentioned in a treaty signed in 1196 between the Count of Toulouse and Richard the Lionheart. Later, on a hilltop, inhabitants came to group together at the foot of the castrum belonging to the lords of Gourdon. It was not until the creation of the bastide that economic life really took off, thanks to the markets.
