A haven for heretics in the 11th century, rebuilt in the 13th century, the castle of Gavaudun, planted on its rocky spur, had a defensive system remarkably well adapted to the site. From the daylight entrance to the promontory of the keep, it was a fortress of daring design, to be discovered in a preserved valley (classified as a nature reserve since 1999). Rebuilt in the 14th century, it must have been impressive, judging by the 70-metre high keep, the last remaining part of the monument. Also worth seeing: the 12th century church and the former priory of Saint-Sardos de Laurenque. Beautiful walks to discover the heritage.
