A charming little town surrounded by vineyards and orchards, "The Muscat Capital of the World" is best known for its sweet wine, which can be tasted in the many cellars and stores in the town center. A pretty fortified town on the banks of the River Agly, Rivesaltes boasts an interesting and carefully maintained heritage in its historic heart. In the more recent past, the Rivesaltes camp was a place of transit and detention for Spanish Republicans. A museum-memorial dedicated to this troubled page in history has been built on the camp's grounds. As soon as the warm weather arrives, numerous festivities punctuate the town's calendar.
