Forty million years ago, nature created a salt mountain in the area of the present-day municipality of Cardona. Since the Neolithic period, its exploitation favored the economic development of the territory, so much so that in the Middle Ages, Cardona was the cradle of the richest family in Catalonia: the Cardona. It was the lords of Cardona who, in the 11th century, built the imposing castle and the Collegiate Church of Sant Vicenç on the top of a hill. Nowadays, the salt mountain is a major tourist attraction. In fact, the old walled city and the Gothic wall have been declared a property of cultural interest
