30 kilometers northwest of Perpignan, this Corbières village nestles in a pretty valley protected by high blue limestone cliffs, with the Verdouble river flowing through its middle. Its shady squares lined with plane trees, its winding alleys, the ruins of the feudal castle that dominates the village from the top of its promontory and its signal tower, the Torre del Far, whose silhouette can be seen for miles around, make it an attractive place to visit. For a long time a quiet little town devoted entirely to winegrowing, Tautavel became famous for the discovery, over forty years ago, of the skull of Europe's oldest hominid (450,000 years old).
