If there had to be an exception in an essentially agricultural department, it would be Saint-Chély. With the arrival of the railway at the end of the last century, the small town became the industrial centre of Lozère, where all life was organised around the iron and steel factory. The factory was founded on a quartz deposit from which silicon was extracted; thanks to the hydroelectricity produced by the Vergne and Ranc power stations, the factory made steel until 1969. This was enough for a handful of enthusiasts to create a museum to pass on the memory of this activity, through the old equipment and the gestures so often repeated
