Initially built around 1120 by Adalard, a lord of Flanders and pilgrim, to serve as a refuge against brigands on the road to Santiago de Compostela, the small hamlet - village of Saint-Chély-d'Aubrac - lost in the middle of nature extends near the remains of the ancient dômerie d'Aubrac (monastery whose abbot had the title of dom). This monastic hospital was, and still is, an important stage on the Via Podiensis. The tower of the 12th century church contains the Maria bell, or "bell of the Lost" which, when rung, served as a landmark for travellers lost in the snow and fog. Hopefully the good weather will be with you!
