It was to protect themselves from attack that the first settlers came to Bozouls. The oldest dwellings and the castle were built in the 9th century on a rocky spur, accessible by a single road to the south. This stronghold, built on the edge of an impressive canyon, was one of the possessions listed in the will of the Count of Rodez, Hugues IV, who died in 1275. Virtually nothing remains of the castle, apart from a few cyclopean blocks, vestiges of its defense system. The Bozouls canyon, known as the "trou de Bozoul", is an impressive geological site, inhabited by a remarkable array of flora and fauna.
