Part of the Communauté de Communes des Cévennes au Mont Lozère, Saint-André-de-Lancize is a small rural commune in Lozère. The village square, a traditional place for gatherings and festivities, is perched in the hamlet of Les Ayres. In the past, this was where the "loue", or chestnut-picking, took place. In 1702, the parish priest Boissonnade was killed in the church that had become a temple by the Camisards, led by Salomon Couderc, a native of Saint-André. Salomon and his followers were determined that evening to free the captured Huguenots. This episode marked the beginning of the Camisard war, which spread throughout the Cévennes.
