The legend is that during the war against Rome, General Carthaginian Hannibal, on his way to Italy, stopped in the village with his armies and famous elephants. But the first mention of Cournonterral, then castrum, appears in the eleventh century. There are, moreover, some beautiful testimonies of that time: medieval alleys and a piece of wall overcome with a large sarrasine tower. Every Wednesday of the Ashes, the inhabitants celebrate the "nuts", a unique event of its kind, to which only the inhabitants of Cournonterral are invited. The center of the commune is closed to the public.
