Saint-Hilaire-de-Brethmas, which borders Saint-Christol-lès-Alès and is separated from the Gardon d'Alès, lies adjacent to Alès, on the old road to Nîmes. This village of seven hamlets is famous for having been the scene of the first negotiations on May 12, 1704 at Pont d'Avène, between Jean Cavalier - a great Camisard leader - and representatives of the royal power during the Cévennes war. The commune has experienced continuous demographic expansion since the 18th century, and today boasts a population of almost 4,200. It strikes a balance between urbanity and rurality, between local shops and agricultural fields.
