Near Alès, Saint-Christol-Lès-Alès is a commune born in the 12th century, between the Languedoc plain and the Cevennes mountains, with the foundation of the Hospitallers of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Crossed by the Gardon and Alzon rivers, its territory is wine-growing (hillside wines), and it has a cooperative cellar. It has 7,000 inhabitants. It is the seat of the famous Coudène brand, renowned for its cod brandade, which is prepared in a thousand different ways. To see: the Pyramid of 1777, the museum of the Scribe which gathers all the supports of writing since 3000 years, and the architectural unit composed of the church and the castle (XIe).
