A naturalist in the 1950s, then a supporter of abstract art in the 1960s, Herman de Vries has devoted himself to the aesthetics of the plant world since the 1970s. He puts his knowledge of plants, their diversity, their medicinal, nutritive or creative virtues at the service of art. During his travels, wanderings and walks in the countryside, he collects elements of nature from which he creates collages, drawings, photographs and sculptures. In this way, he wants to teach us to see nature again, to contemplate its cycles, to be attentive to the beauty of processes that we tend to neglect and take for granted. He reminds us that man is not separate from nature, but that he is part of it and depends on it. The plant world is not only the condition of our survival but also the source of our imagination and our deep roots.
His work does not seek formal beauty, but rather values the common biodiversity of an undergrowth or a path, without spectacular effect. He knows how to show us how these places are rich in life and how they turn out to be a fertile ground for diversity as soon as we leave them in peace. The artist wants to emphasize the aesthetic value of nature: "I only quote nature".
The devices used by herman de vries are intended to make the chance that shapes and composes our environment perceptible. The humility and neutrality of his artistic process reveal the universality of the landscape and abolish any hierarchy between living beings. This is why the artist refuses to use capital letters to distinguish humans from other species, so that his name and the texts referring to his work are always written in lower case.
herman de vries challenges the development of our civilization, which constantly threatens the natural landscape, and tries to reconnect with an original and untouched nature. Breaking with the European tradition that opposes nature and civilization, he favours a new culture of nature, holistic and universal, capable of responding to the environmental challenges of the third millennium.

Born in 1931 in Alkmaar, the Netherlands, herman de vries lives and works in Eschenau, Germany. his work is included in the world's most important collections (CentrePpompidou, Paris;
