As its name indicates, Port-la-Nouvelle is a rather recent city and a port open to the Mediterranean. It was created by a decree of Louis Philippe on July 21, 1844. But the site was known to navigators from the beginning of the Christian era, as a place of passage for ships in the Mediterranean trading with Narbonne. In this grau surrounded by marshy areas, a small group of houses agglutinated at first which was going to grow quickly with the arrival of the railroad linking Narbonne to Perpignan. Port-la-Nouvelle, a seaside resort, offers 15 km of fine sand where you can practice volleyball, horseback riding, windsurfing, but also preserved natural sites such as the island of Sainte-Lucie, a beautiful scrubland, or the ponds and the Robine canal. One takes time to taste the local products on Mondays and Thursdays by the sea. The market is also held on Wednesdays and Saturdays near the church. In summer, on Sunday mornings, you can attend troll fishing, depending on the weather. Also on the summer program, the open air shows of the Théâtre en garrigue. Enjoy tastings of local products on Mondays and Thursdays by the sea and stock up on provisions at the market held on Wednesdays and Saturdays near the church. And you'll stay on course with the typical red and white striped lighthouse that marks the landscape of Port-la-Nouvelle. Go to sea on a sailboat, sail on the canal de la robine, hike or pedal on the paths, go along the salt flats... Port-la-Nouvelle is revealed and appreciated in many ways.
