As its name indicates, Port-la-Nouvelle is a rather recent city and a port open to the Mediterranean. It was created by a decree of Louis Philippe on July 21, 1844. But the site was known to navigators from the beginning of the Christian era, as a place of passage for ships in the Mediterranean trading with Narbonne.
