Situated between the sea, ponds, vineyards and oyster beds, the Leucate peninsula takes its name from the ancient Greek "leukos" meaning whiteness, named by sailors as a point of reference and orientation. Leucate extends over 17 kilometres of beaches, ponds, channels and harbour basins. It is surrounded by a protected natural landscape of great diversity, which welcomes gulls, flamingos, egrets, great cormorants, ox guards... (classified as a Natura 2000 area). It is composed of four tourist poles: Leucate-Village, La Franqui, Port-Leucate and Leucate-Plage. "La Plagette" is the most beautiful beach on the Aude coast.
