Situated on the border of the Pyrénées-Orientales department, the name Fitou comes from the Latin word "Fita" meaning the limit, certainly because of its position and its strategic location as a north-south link between France and Spain. Built in the bed of a stream, the village stretches out in picturesque streets. Other points of interest include the 12th-century church and its Romanesque portal, the 11th-century castle overlooking the old quarters and, away from the village, the Saint-Aubin hermitage and its pre-Romanesque chapel, the Roman emissary that drains the Pla de Fitou. Fitou is the cradle of an important vineyard, so the village has many wine tasting cellars.
