Montfermeil, whose history dates back to 3000 BC, was first mentioned in 1122. At the beginning of the 17th century it became a châtellenie and later, in 1678, a castle was built there. Montfermeil owes its notoriety to Victor Hugo, whose famous novel Les Misérables was inspired by it. The town was also famous for its pilgrimage to Notre-Dame-des-Anges, during which believers drank water from a miraculous spring located in the Bondy forest. With an important architectural heritage, the town developed from the 19th century with the installation of the tramway while the first apartment buildings were built after 1945
