Champs-sur-Marne was first mentioned in the 7th century. The town's heritage includes the 17th-century Saint-Loup church and an 18th-century château. It was here that General de Gaulle hosted several heads of state. Now a community of communes, it includes Cité Descartes, a university center well worth a visit. For proof, drop by avenue Blaise Pascal to see the spectacular ESIEE Paris engineering school, behind Piotr Kowalski's astonishing "Axis of the Earth" sculpture. Note that in Champs, the banks of the Marne have been landscaped with bicycle and pedestrian paths.
