Separated from Montfort by the Risle, like a green suburb of the capital, Saint-Philbert-sur-Risle is a village with a rich historical heritage. The commune is very old; already known under the Merovingians, it is said that at that time the place called the Dog's Nest was a hunting place for picketers and their dogs. The origin of its name is linked according to legend to Saint-Philibert, born around 616. When the abbot of Jumièges evangelized the region, the Risle prevented him from passing on the other bank. But Philibert managed to cross the river in a boat that appeared to be a miracle. A place of worship will be erected on this site."City of Light": in 1885, Augustin Hébert, a carpenter of mills and a very industrious man, set up the first electrical installation in our country, making Saint-Philbert the first municipality in France to be electrified!
