Sandwiched between the Seine and the limestone cliffs, this village once had no arable land and very little pasture. With the resumption and development of maritime and river transport in the aftermath of the Hundred Years' War, between the second half of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, La Bouille took on another dimension, as did its port. Today, this commune on the banks of the Seine has become a tourist attraction thanks to its ferry, its restaurants, its narrow streets and its art galleries. The house where Hector Malot was born, the author of Without Family, is located on the eponymous quay and is still inhabited by his descendants.
