Montignac sur Vézère has been known the world over since the discovery of the Lascaux cave near the town in 1940. Its position in the Vézère valley is no coincidence. As a major communications axis, the valley had to be controlled. This is why a castle, that of the Counts of Périgord, blocked the passage. It was the scene of several sieges during the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion. Montignac is home to many old houses, including those on the banks of the Vézère, which are highly exposed to the river's floods. Every July, Montignac hosts the Cultures aux cœurs festival, dedicated to world dance and music.
