Historians have succeeded in tracing the history of the village back to the 12th century, when the village of Panzoult appears as Peiso, Pensot and Pensolt, respectively, in the charters of the abbeys of Turpenay, Marmoutier and Noyers. In the 16th century, the cave of the Sibyl was built in Panzoult. Rabelais placed one of the episodes of the Third Book there: his characters Panurge and Epistémon come to consult the soothsayer on the advice of Pantagruel.
