Crossed by the Manse and two arms of the Vienne, L'Île-Bouchard, with a surface area of 3.5 km², has a particular configuration with an island in its middle and two suburbs on either side of the Vienne. With a rich historical past, it was founded by a lord named Bouchard in the 9th century. Today it has many points of interest: the 15th century church of Saint-Maurice, the mill on the river and the dolmen, the Temple castle, the Saint-Leonard priory and the Bouchardais museum. The 11th century church of Saint-Gilles is said to have been visited by Joan of Arc on her way to meet Charles VII in 1429.
