Located between Blois and Tours, Amboise is a city of 13,000 inhabitants on the banks of the Loire. Most of its territory lies on the south bank, where the river embraces Ile Saint-Jean (formerly Ile d'Or). Indre-et-Loire's second-largest industrial hub, it is best known for its rich historical heritage, and first and foremost for its superb Château Royal. Leonardo da Vinci's tomb is located here in the Chapelle Saint-Hubert. The Château Royal d'Ambroise has also been home to the courts of many kings: Louis XI, Charles VIII and François I. Nearby, discover the magnificent Château du Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci lived for 3 years before dying in 1519. The Italian genius not only contributed to the town's intellectual influence, but also helped Amboise become the capital of the French Renaissance. The city's panoramic view of the Unesco-listed Loire Valley makes it easy to understand the influence it exerted on the artists of the time, who were fascinated and amazed by its beauty. Take their point of view, from the top of the Château Royal or from across the river. Depending on the sun and the light, the postcard scenery changes and can be admired in every season. And don't forget to stop off at the Chanteloup pagoda, an 18th-century Chinese-inspired monument set in a beautiful park. To help you make the most of your visit, the commune's website suggests a number of walking routes.
