Situated on the north bank of the Loire, a few kilometres from Chinon and Saumur, the history of Bourgueil is inseparable from its richness in wine production. The town has also given its name to a wine of controlled origin (AOC). The vineyard covers 1,400 hectares and produces 70,000 hectolitres, almost exclusively of red wine. According to legend, it was the Gallo-Romans who brought the first vines to the region. The town traces its history through a free tourist circuit, from the Halles centrales to the Abbey Saint-Pierre, via the Château de la Rivière and the Maison des Vins.
