Situated to the west of the Indre and Loire rivers, surrounded by vineyards and nature, Chinon is one of the department's best-endowed towns in terms of heritage. This richness has earned it a place on Unesco's World Heritage list of cultural landscapes. The town really took off in the Middle Ages, under the reign of Henry II Plantagenet, Count of Anjou and husband of Eleanor of Aquitaine, who became King of England in 1154. The sovereign made the Château de Chinon one of his favorite residences. But there's an even more famous figure associated with Chinon: François Rabelais. This writer, priest, doctor and above all bon vivant and free thinker often found inspiration in the Touraine countryside. A museum (in Seuilly) and a cultural center in the town pay tribute to him. Joan of Arc also left her mark on Chinon, where she first met the dauphin, the future Charles VII. Chinon's historic center is a jewel, classified as a protected area as early as 1968. The town also gives its name to an excellent AOC wine. The Chinon area has an unshakeable link with winegrowing, which shapes the landscape of the surrounding countryside. You're sure to appreciate the range of AOC Chinon wines on offer at restaurants or by visiting the producers' cellars. Chinon is a very pleasant stopover, especially for cyclists, who will find charging stations and bicycle parking. Stroll along the quays and admire the view of the Royal Fortress.
