The town takes its name from Celtic times. The hill was dedicated to the god Lug - Lug-dunum - Loudun. Later, during the High Middle Ages, the Counts of Poitiers and Anjou fought over the country. In 981, Geoffroy Martel of Anjou seized it and annexed it to Anjou. In 1206, the Loudunais region was linked to the crown by King Philippe Auguste, who had an exceptional fortress built on the site of the Roman castrum. The famous Tour Carrée, Loudun's emblem, can still be seen and visited today. Take the Tèrra Aventura trail and discover the buildings in a whole new way. And don't miss the Musée Renaudot, the famous founder of the press.
