This small medieval town owes its present location to a late11th-century priory. Founded in 1270, it took on its present appearance under English rule, and suffered a terrible battle in 1377. After the Hundred Years' War, it became one of the major centers of reformed worship. Eymet lies in a meander of the river Dropt. Here, you can admire a Romanesque bridge over fish-filled waters. The 15th-and 16th-century houses are arranged around an arcaded square and covered market, forming an admirable architectural ensemble with the timber-framed houses and fortified castle. Eymet, a French bastide, now has a strong English presence.
