In 911, when the Duchy of Normandy was created, Dreux became a frontier town responsible for defending France against Norman incursions. Hugues Capet had a fortress built, which he gave to his younger brother, Robert. Dismantled by Henri IV, it was replaced by a collegiate church, then, in 1816, by the royal chapel of Saint-Louis. Built in the 16th century, the belfry, a symbol of the city's new freedoms, is a magnificent blend of flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance styles. The attic houses the city's big bell, the bourdon, with its frieze depicting the ancient procession of the flambarts, commemorated in December.
