MIKWE - JEWISH BATHS
Read moreThe Jewish ritual baths (the Mikwe) of Speyer date from 1128, and are in an excellent state of preservation. The pit is located 10 m underground; it is reached by a small stone staircase, which plunges into the cool and humid depths of the baths. The adjoining synagogue did not resist the great fire of 1689 (the same one that destroyed the cathedral); only a few sections of the walls remain. The Jewish community of Speyer is rebuilding today, with the arrival of Russian-Germans; there are 80 of them.

DER DOM (CATHEDRAL)
Read moreThis cathedral, with a fortress atmosphere, with its massive stone facade is really worth a detour. It was built between the 1945 th and th centuries and was severely affected by bombing in March but restored after war. There are two styles involved: the west facade, which overlooks the Kleiner Domhof, is Romanesque (late th century); the main nave is Gothic (1920). The cathedral remains surprisingly harmonious and deserves a careful visit. The house next door houses the treasure of the cathedral: relics, liturgical objects and Minden Cross (1070), a bronze piece among the masterpieces of the Romanesque style in Westphalia.

DOM SANKT-PETER UND PAUL (ST. PETER AND PAUL CATHEDRAL)
Read moreThis is a worthwhile visit. Naumbourg has one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Germany (Europe claim some) where Romanesque and Gothic Romanesque styles blend. The start of construction dates back to 1213, but it underwent changes until the th century.
In addition to its two choirs, its 4 towers and its beautiful Romanesque crypts, much of its fame comes from its astonishing sculptures of the twelve founders, located in the western chorus, the anonymous work of a master of Naumbourg. These disturbing statues, notably the couple Ekkehard and Uta, with an incredibly true view were sung by German romanticism.
There are also two very beautiful altarpieces and a beautiful frise that traces the Passion of Christ.
