Read moreIn order to protect the coast from any invasion during the Roman period, watch towers were constructed. Most of the towers were destroyed after the Napoleonic wars. The semaphore which is 100 meters high was built in 1860 on a promontory overlooking both the city and sea. During the Second World War, it was occupied by German troops, and later became the marine office until 1958 when it became the sentinel of the sea up till 1979. The present building was inaugurated on January 13 1986. An orientation post is found nearby.
