Nestled in the hollow of the Weidach valley in the shadow of the Galz tree, the village of Niedermorschwihr lies on one of the three roads leading to the Trois-Épis health resort. Its inhabitants are known as Morvilois (or Morvilais). As you enter Niedermorschwihr, you'll immediately notice the church's twisted 12th-century steeple, a curiosity in Alsace! A little anecdote: in 2013, a bottle containing a message with the signatures of all the personalities who contributed to the church's renovation after the Second World War was found in the ball of its weather vane. And then, of course, there's the steep vineyard, with the Sommerberg classified as a Grand Cru. Rieslings and Pinot Gris are produced here from granite soil similar to that of Brand, another famous Grand Cru. A walk through the heart of Sommerberg allows you to fully appreciate the typical beauty of this village with its well-preserved architecture, as it is surrounded by vineyards and new construction is virtually impossible. It offers a vast panorama of the Letzenberg, the Brand Pass and the Alsace plain. For the record, our Japanese friends have fallen in love with the village ever since, in 1985, some thirty technicians settled in Niedermorschwihr for a few months to produce the thirteen episodes of a television series called Ciel bleu d'Alsace. Broadcast at prime time by Fuji TV, the series helped put this little corner of Alsace on the map in the Land of the Rising Sun!
