Nestled between vineyards and forest, this generously-flowered village boasts some forty wineries! Ammerschwihr is world-famous for its Kaefferkopf (beetle's head), a superb terroir classified as a Grand Cru since 2007. As far as heritage is concerned, most of it was lost during the violent bombardments of the Second World War. Miraculously spared by the bombs, an imposing crucifix dating from 1606 is now preserved in the Saint-Martin church. Other major remains include the Tour des Voleurs (former prison) and Tour des Bourgeois, both fortified and well-preserved. They now house tasting rooms.
